A thorough spring clean, which took place at Just Shutters HQ in Bournemouth recently, has provided some much-needed additional funds for a highly deserving local charity.

Just Shutters co-founder, Helen Rocker, explained: “The clear-out was well overdue, to be honest, but the reason it happened was because we wanted to see if we could find stock we could sell off so we could make a donation to Julia’s House. They do fantastic work here in Bournemouth.

“We found quite a lot of ex- display shutters and put them on display in the shop so people could buy them, with all proceeds going to charity. Actually, I really must thank everyone who supported us by buying items of stock. We were able to raise £300, which is fantastic, and we presented a cheque to John Day, one of Julia’s Houses’ volunteers.”

Julia's House is Dorset's only hospice dedicated to children with life-limiting conditions. Sadly, most of the children who receive care at Julia’s House are unlikely to live beyond the age of 18. Complementing the work of community team nurses and carers throughout the county, the hospice provides support for families, both in their own homes and in the hospice.

There’s no doubt, Julia’s House is a hugely deserving cause, yet it relies heavily on donations from fundraising activity in the community. Less than 10 per cent of its funding comes from government and in 2013 the charity estimates that it will cost nearly £3.4m to continue to provide its much-needed services. Julia's House cares for about 100 children at any one time. There are 76 staff working for its care team (full-time equivalent 69 staff) and the service is split 50-50 between caring for children in the hospice and in their own homes.

Helen added: “It’s such a worthy cause, ours was a small contribution really, but we were delighted to show our support for the fantastic work they do. I think it’s important that businesses such as ours do what they can to support organisations such as Julia’s House that are doing such valuable work in their local communities.”
