The new Mayor of Milton Keynes, Councillor Brian White unzipped a specially made giant six foot zip at the Midsummer Place shopping mall to officially open The ZipYard garment repair centre at on Monday 17 June.
Owned by Irish businessman Pat Fitzgerald, the ZipYard created two new local jobs and offers a wide range of alteration and tailoring services, all done on site by trained professionals in a clean, purpose-built environment. Located on the first floor in West Walk above the O2 shop, the centre has a separate bridal suite and individual fitting rooms where the company’s skilled seamstresses can pin up alterations in situ.
A quantity surveyor by trade, Pat decided to look to the UK to build a business following the decline of the construction industry in Ireland. He identified Milton Keynes as a promising location for his new venture and relocated his wife and three young children under four from Limerick to the city, opening the ZipYard two months ago.
The ZipYard concept is tremendously successful in Eire and Northern Ireland but has reached capacity which is why Pat chose to join the growing number of people setting up ZipYards in England, Scotland and Wales.
He said: “Milton Keynes has a can-do attitude and the reaction to the ZipYard has been very positive. We are way ahead of where I expected to be sales -wise at this point and I’m well on track with my plans to open another three ZipYards in the surrounding area within 18 months.”
Commenting on the opening of the new business Cllr White said: “As Mayor and a fellow Irishman I am delighted to welcome Pat and his family to Milton Keynes and wish the ZipYard every success. Our city has so much to offer in terms of facilities and opportunities for business growth and I am sure that the services offered by the ZipYard will prove very popular here.”
From dress re-styling and taking in or letting out garments to bridal-wear fitting or formal wear alterations, The ZipYard can do it all. There is also a 1-hour express service for zips, hems and minor repairs. Shoppers can buy a garment in the morning and have the alterations done in time to wear the outfit that evening.
