You’re never too young to learn. That’s the thinking of ComputerXplorers, the UK’s leading provider of ICT education for children, which is teaching toddlers IT skills at a brand new nursery school in Edinburgh. On Thursday mornings Lynne Kerr, owner of ComputerXplorers South East Scotland, teaches ICT to a group of nursery pupils from Bruntsfield House Nursery in Bruntsfield Place.
ComputerXplorers run ICT classes that are fun and educational for children aged 3 to 13.
Bruntsfield House Nursery opened last October and currently has 28 children enrolled. Its policy is to be open and friendly, providing a relaxed atmosphere where children can develop and learn.
Manager Jean McIntyre said: “I didn’t even know how to use a computer until I was in my thirties but computer skills are essential for today’s children. By introducing them to technology at an early age they will have a head start on other children when they start big school.”
The children, who are taught in groups of three for 30 minutes at a time, use interactive software packages with popular characters from film and TV such as Nemo and Bob the Builder, to develop their numeracy skills and letter recognition. They also get to grips with basic programming, by giving instructions to BeeBot - the robot, which helps their spatial awareness and basic maths. The children get reward stickers after every session and a certificate at the end of each module.
Lynne Kerr, ComputerXplorers, said: “The classes have a huge impact on the children’s preparation for primary school, especially as ICT is central to the Government’s plans for education.
“It gives them the opportunity to use ICT, which they may not be able to do at home, and we can provide a much wider range of software activities than most nurseries can offer.”
ComputerXplorers classes are available in schools, during curriculum time, after-school and holiday clubs. To find out about getting a ComputerXplorers class running in your nursery or school contact Lynne on 0131 653 0580 or email lynnekerr@sescotland.computerxplorers.co.uk
