2008 will see the 50th Anniversary of Kumon, celebrating the fact that Kumon is currently helping over four million children around the world to reach their potential in 45 countries. That means that one child somewhere in the world is improving their skills with Kumon every minute of every single day.

Kumon was started in Japan in 1958 by Toru Kumon, a maths teacher and parent who was striving to help his own son with his maths studies. The success of his unique instructional method spread rapidly through his local community, across Japan and then to other parts of the world. His belief that every individual child has the potential to excel still remains central to Kumon’s philosophy.

“We, at Kumon, have sound learning materials and an instructional method that has been cultivated over the past half-century,” explains Hiroshi Yamawaki, GM of Kumon UK. “By finding the right level for each student and advancing their study to higher levels, we can bring out and develop their ability, to enrich their life. Today, Kumon is implemented throughout the world, and we see a number of Kumon completers in many countries, who have all learned that they can complete something if they try.”

Kumon’s approach is to build long-term foundations in core subjects and to give each child self-study skills. The Kumon programmes are individualised to each child, with the pace and progression placed in each child’s hands. Students get to grips with calculation skills and mental arithmetic without using calculators, and improve their spelling and grammar. Each child is also given self-learning skills and the important commodity of confidence.

Unlike tuition, Kumon is a method of individualised independent study, using tried and tested materials that build key English and maths skills and give children the skills they need to succeed at school and beyond. Rather than being taught, children are motivated and guided to achieve their potential by trained Kumon Instructors.
