When Lynne Kerr, owner of ComputerXplorers South-East Scotland was planning the content of her week- long summer holiday club she called on Five Sisters Zoo to help provide ‘forensic’ samples for her CSi themed sessions.
The club is being held from 8 – 12 August at St George’s School for Girls in Edinburgh. On two of the days children attending the club will become mini sleuths learning about a host of forensic skills using digital microscopes and computers to solve a pretend crime scenario. The other three days will be spent designing video games, animating their own films and making controllable Lego robots.
Each of the CSi days covers a different aspect of the ‘investigation’ and Lynne thought it would be fun for the children to be able to compare human hair with examples taken from the zoo’s Shetland pony and miniature donkeys during the session on hair analysis. The children will also learn how to work the field scene, examining finger-prints and using tyre imprint identification.
“We were very happy to help,” said Lesley Coupar, spokesman for Five Sisters. “Education plays an important role in what we do here and I am sure the children will find making the hair comparison very interesting.”
Said ComputerXplorers owner Lynne Kerr: “The children love CSi and it will probably be one of their highlights of the week. They get so engrossed in their investigations they don’t even realise that they are learning valuable technology skills along the way.
“Our aim at ComputerXplorers is to help children get a head start in life by developing an early understanding of technology to see how computers can be used in every subject – not just IT lessons.”
After a morning of ComputerXplorers activities the children will be taking part in sport during the afternoon in the week-long holiday camp run in conjunction with Excel Summer Camp. There are only 20 places available. To book online visit www.excel-sports.co.uk/activities/computer-xplorers
