I have dealt with a great many franchisors over the past 3 years, some 800+ of them in fact and I have found that they fall into certain categories, a bit of a sweeping statement yes but let me explain.

Franchisor 1 falls into the caring category. They want to expand their business but not to the expense of their brand and not to the detriment of their franchisee's. They want a certain breed of person to join them and despite high levels of enquiries only a few people ever get to buy into their franchise proposition. They run a small but efficient franchise network with highly trusted franchisee's who are all fit for the job of carrying on the brand name.

Franchisor 2 falls into the "anything goes" category. They are ruthless, cut throat and care little for their franchisee's, although you would not know this when you are going through the interview process. The main aim here is to shift as many units as possible and so long as you have the franchise fee you are in, regardless of experience and suitability.

Franchisor 3 falls into the newbie category. They have a great business idea and want to expand it across the country, selling 100+ franchises in their first year. Oh if life was so easy! This number whittles down fast, as fast as their marketing pot empties. This franchisor learns quick that he has 1500 competitors all vying to sell their franchise also and soon learns that it is not an easy market to break into.

Franchisor 4 falls into the "nation brand" category. It's ain't cheap, it's not low cost, but it's efficient, well run and professional. They have a national brand and you will have a strict set of instructions to stick to to ensure that the national brand stays as is. Hard work and dedication will see you running their heavily branded franchise very successfully. Every franchisor wants to be this franchisor, it is the model that they see themselves following but in reality only a handful of franchisors will ever achieve the elite status that the 300+ outlets national brand franchise has.

Franchisor 5 falls into the "I don't care" category. They think their franchisee's are an ungrateful bunch of whiners, they do not realise their business model sucks badly and thinks their franchisee's are simply not doing enough work. To cut a long story short, this franchisor is a self centred scam artist s.o.a.b. who will take your money + 100 others and leave a fiery trail of disaster behind them as they drink cocktails on some Spanish resort on the back of your franchise fee. See that Merc fleet they own? That Spanish Villa? That is the souls of 100+ franchisees they have there, the life savings of many. This franchisor you need to spot quickly and steer clear of.

All said and done, we all have our own personalities and franchisors have their own group personalities, match yours to the right franchisor and you can find yourself investing in a lifetime opportunity, just beware of franchisor 5 as you do not want to be paying for someone else's Merc when you could be buying your own.
