For Guildford businessman Alan Harrison the release of the past Harry Potter film has brought back some happy memories.

He was part of the Warner Brothers licensing team when the very first Harry Potter movie was released, setting off world-wide Harry Potter mania seven years ago.

“It went absolutely mad,” said Alan, who has recently set up his own business called ComputerXplorers to teach information technology to school children. “I was involved on the FMCG licensing side so was dealing with global brands such as Mars, Colgate and Kellogg’s who wanted Harry Potter images on confectionery, cereals and tooth brushes. I think the massive reaction to the film took us all by surprise – it was an amazing time.”

One of the products he was involved in licensing even found its way into the Big Brother House. He explained: “A glow -in -the -dark Scooby Doo toy was included free inside promotional boxes of Sugar Puffs and the cereal must have been provided in the house. The toy was found and there was quite a bit of amusing coverage about the after dark antics of the housemates with the toy!”

But after twelve years in the licensing industry Alan has decided the time is right to take stock of his career. He has always wanted to run his own business and had been looking for an opportunity to put the skills he learned in the entertainment industry to good use but at the same time be in charge of his own destiny.

So after a great deal of research he has chosen to set up ComputerXplorers in the West Surrey. The opportunity appealed to him because he could see an increasing gap in the market for top quality ICT provision in primary schools and is committed to helping children get a head start in life by developing an early understanding of technology.

Said Alan: “By buying a franchise I am getting a proven business model combined with support from head office and a network of like-minded colleagues throughout the country. I am really looking forward to introducing the ComputerXplorers concept to local schools and growing the business over the next few years. It may not gain as much fame as Harry Potter by I certainly hope it will become just as popular!”

ComputerXplorers classes are designed to combine fun with learning. The courses integrate the use of ICT across all curriculum subjects and will encourage children to embrace technology as part of their every-day learning from an early age.

The company will be running classes in subjects such as Crime Scene Investigation, digital animation and robotics which combine computer skills with a fun factor. Pre-school age children will learn how to control little bee shaped robots while older pupils can create their own websites and design their own video games.

To book an after school club or enquire about becoming a ComputerXplorers teacher contact Alan Harrison on 01483 600272 or 07717 488060.
