On Sunday 27 April 2008 at 10:00 am, Kumon holds its first regional High-Level Student Awards at The Quays Theatre at The Lowry in Manchester. These annual awards are a celebration of outstanding student achievement within the Kumon programme and are held throughout the year in six different regions within the UK and Ireland. This prestigious event will bring together high level students, parents and Instructors from the North West region to inspire, motivate and learn from one another.

The ceremony is being held at The Quays Theatre at The Lowry - winner of Visitor Attraction of the Year and Building of the Year 2001 - set in a magnificent waterside location at the heart of Manchester’s latest must-visit destination, The Quays. The Lowry is a unique building, comprising two main theatres, studio space, a restaurant and an art gallery housing a large collection of paintings by Salford-born artist LS Lowry, as well as contemporary exhibitions. It provides an impressive and engaging backdrop for the High-Level Student Awards.

Given the setting, the theme of the awards will be ‘At the Theatre’ with schoolchildren from St Edmund Arrowsmith, Ashton-in-Makerfield, performing a short play at the beginning of the ceremony. There will also be a number of presentations from students and Instructors, a raffle, number board challenges and a fun mini-mathathon for students and parents, in aid of Save the Children. Awards will include level I and L awards, programme completion certificates and an Inspirational Parent Award, as a thank you to parents for their continued support.

The highest accolade, the Inspirational Student Award, is being given to Daniel Chow, 15, a student at the Lytham St Annes study centre. Daniel has been studying Kumon for six years. He is a well-respected and admired member of the class and studies both maths and English at a high level (maths level J, English level H). He is a very focused and dedicated student and always manages to complete daily work despite having a large amount of school homework – even during the school holidays!

Sue Osborne, who runs the centre said: “Kumon study requires a certain amount of commitment and tenacity from both parent and child in order to be successful. By adopting the ‘little and often’ approach, Daniel has really applied himself and as a direct result has made continuous and steady progress as he has risen up through the various study levels. He is a pleasure to have in class; he always works hard and is happy to help the younger children with their worksheets.”

Sue became a Kumon Instructor following the success her own children had with Kumon. She feels strongly that Kumon helped her daughter, who is now studying at Cambridge University. “By following the Kumon Method of self-learning, my daughter is able to work problems through in a logical manner which has certainly helped her with her university work. By working at their own pace and at their ‘just right level’ of study, Kumon ensures there are no gaps in a child’s knowledge, building solid foundations for the future.”

Before the award ceremony, students can meet at special level exchange tables to help and encourage one another by sharing their own Kumon experiences and offer advice on getting through the more challenging but rewarding levels.

The High-Level Student Awards are open to all G-League students and above, their parents and their Instructors so they can celebrate, together, the huge achievements they have made.
