The start of 2008 saw the launch of the second National Year of Reading; meanwhile World Book Day is also fast approaching. Both initiatives have similar aims, to encourage people, and children in particular, to read; aims that are very close to Kumon’s heart. Resultantly, Kumon believes both initiatives are a great idea and is actively supporting and celebrating both of them by encouraging children to read and promoting reading-related activities on its website.

Kumon’s English programme focuses not only on improving children’s reading ability but also on developing a love of reading. “At Kumon, reading is at the forefront of our activities.” explains Mike John, Kumon UK’s English Project Manager. “Through regular, daily exposure to a variety of texts, our students have access to stories they ordinarily wouldn’t have the chance to read.”

“We promote World Book Day to students and think the National Year of Reading is a fantastic idea,” he continues, “because we firmly believe that the continued development of reading helps students achieve their potential in many academic subjects, as well as developing their creative minds for life-long success.”

The National Year of Reading is an initiative that plans to change the nature of reading forever as part of the government’s Every Parent Matters document. Ed Balls, the Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families is reported to have said: “The 2008 National Year of Reading will create a powerful focus of opportunities and activities so that children, families and adult learners understand the benefits that reading for pleasure and purpose can bring to change their lives.”

World Book Day takes place on 6 March. The day gives an annual push to help and persuade children pick up and enjoy a good book of their own.

The Kumon English Programme was designed with two aims. The first was to develop the ability to read and understand a wide variety of texts, and the second, to develop a life-long habit of reading for both education and enjoyment.
