During the first five years in a child’s life it is important to establish singing as a means of communication and expression. Research shows that babies in particular, need to have all their senses stimulated. There are therefore many benefits to young children who attend baby music classes as well as music classes for toddlers and pre-schoolers.

In this modern world, life moves at a very fast pace and it is very tempting to sit a child in front of a TV or wonderful expensive toys. However there is no substitute for active learning. Talking and singing to a young child will enable them to listen and learn.

Rhythm Time, one of the leading providers of educational music classes to babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers, is passionate about the benefits that music can bring. In fact, they are currently supporting the National Year of Communication’s Hello campaign by helping to provide musical resources for some families requiring Speech & Language Therapy.

“Unaccompanied singing is particularly beneficial for a young child as they can hear the words and melody clearly” states Kathy Doolan, Founder of Rhythm Time.

To enjoy music it is important to nurture and foster an interest in music as early as possible. Children who are exposed to a wide variety of musical concepts and experiences (particularly at baby music classes and beyond) will enjoy music for the rest of their lives. Speech development, social skills, confidence and many other areas will also be enhanced.

It is most important for children to experience music at this early age since they are at their most receptive. It can be beneficial to them in three ways: emotionally, intellectually and physically.

Music is an important influence in a child’s life: It helps develop vital self-confidence and give them a sense of achievement. It also helps develop language skills, co-ordination and listening.

Children respond to the rise and fall of melody from a very early age and music can stretch our imagination, calm us and move us to dance. Children making music together even at a young age, learn to co-operate and gain pride in what they are achieving. They learn to express themselves through music and in turn this can increase their vocabulary and communication skills. Above all music enriches children’s lives and it’s great fun too.

Rhythm Time provides a set of unique music courses specially written by Kathy Doolan who was previously Head of Music at a Scottish school. Each course (aimed at three different age groups: babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers) helps with development and learning and provides continuity of skills achieved at each stage:

In their baby music classes, activities aim to stimulate vision, listening and sense of touch. This helps with eye tracking, balance, development of the inner ear, speech, language and small motor movements.

In their music classes for toddlers, the musical activities aid listening and concentration. Hand eye co-ordination and motor skills are strengthened by using musical instruments. Language and vocal chords are developed from singing.

In their music classes for pre-schoolers, the music classes will help improve communication, language, literacy, maths skills and creative development.

Subsequently, children can enjoy a wonderful introduction to music and to future music making.
