Tutor Doctor demonstrates business growth in the North West

Recent figures show that the North West was the only region in England to see a rise in the rate of business failures in January compared with the same month last year.
While other business owners are holding back on investment over uncertainly in the recovery in demand being sustained, Andrew Fowler of Tutor Doctor Cheshire, is seeing his business of franchise origin, flourish. So much so, he’s recently invested more.
Andrew made the commitment to owning his own business over a year ago, this was a big step for his family, as both he and his wife would be giving up their secure jobs to pursue their business dream.
They decided early on that his route into business should follow a proven method of business success and growth. So with that in mind he looked into the franchising model for his new business.
After teaming up with a franchise consultancy company that profile each candidate and makes recommendations based on its findings he was led towards his current business, Tutor Doctor.
Tutor Doctor is an international franchise organisation that originally started in Canada circa 2010 by founder, John Hooi. The business has gained tremendous momentum over that ten years plus trading and is now prevalent in the United States Canada, and the UK.
Of working with a franchise, Andrew says, ‘it has been brilliant; the model works well in any country with very little modification needed. We started in April 2010 with great enthusiasm and ambition to be very successful. The more successful we could become the more people we could ultimately help, a symbiotic relationship if you like?’
His business has grown exponentially over the last year and he currently looks after a large client base. But of course we all have to start somewhere. And Fowler recalls how nerve wracking it was in securing his first customer.
‘I remember fondly our first client was a young girl aged 11 years old in need of help with various subjects. We met the parents at their home for a free consultation and we proceeded with the work and format we were trained to use.
‘The consultation went really well and we did our best to remember all our training and the markers we should hit at each point in the consultation. We secured a 48 hour contract to provide our service to that family and it was a sheer joy.’
Today some 11 months later Andrew’s business has been finely tuned, so much so he has expanded and recently purchased 3 further territories, has moved into a new office and is looking at hiring his first permanent staff.
When Andrew joined Tutor Doctor it was at an early stage in the UK, and he was in fact just the 5th franchise to open here. But he lives by the motto, the more you put in, the more you will get out. This has recently lead him to the position of Regional Vice President for the whole of the UK.
‘We have worked so hard for our own business and also for the development of the whole Tutor Doctor franchise. We have given unselfishly to the system, introduced new business opportunities and initiatives for the benefit of the whole of the UK.’
Given the current economic concerns in the UK, particularly in the North West, it is always pleasing to learn that some small businesses are succeeding.
